The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Music for prayer, reflection and devotion to Our Lady

On 15 August, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary — the feast on which we proclaim that Mary, having completed her earthly life, was taken body and soul into heavenly glory. It is one of the great Marian feasts of the liturgical year, a day of joy, praise and gratitude for the gift of Our Lady.

Whether you are preparing music for Mass, praying at home, or simply seeking a moment of quiet reflection, we invite you to celebrate this joyful feast through sacred music and devotion to Our Lady - and, with Mary, to turn our hearts towards her Son.

Scripture & Song

The Magnificat

At Mass during the Day for the Solemnity of the Assumption, the Gospel tells of Mary's visit to Elizabeth and includes her great canticle of praise - the Magnificat (Luke 1:39-56).  In it, Mary rejoices in the great things God has done for her and proclaims his mercy from generation to generation.  Her words have echoed through centuries of Christian prayer and song.  In it, Mary glorifies God for the wonders he has worked in her and in the world, and her words have echoed through centuries of Christian prayer and song.

Holy Is His Name (My Soul Is Filled with Joy) is the Emmaus Music recording that offers a beautiful musical reflection on Mary's song of praise. It draws directly on the words of the Magnificat and makes a fitting centrepiece for prayer and liturgy on this feast.
